Ports are likely to face much higher insurance costs in the aftermath of hurricane Katrina, but in any case there is mounting concern over the apparent increasing frequency and severity of hurricanes. A recent paper in Nature magazine argues that hurricanes in the Atlantic and Pacific regions are more than twice as destructive as they were 30 years ago.*
