It is almost ten years since the transition from government to predominantly private ownership of Australian railways began, and with it a process of consolidation that now sees only three major freight operators – the Toll/Patrick joint venture Pacific National (PN), the Westfarmers/Genessee & Wyoming joint venture Australian Railroad Group (ARG) and the still state governmentowned Queensland Rail (QR).
