BC Port strike enters fourth day

Longshore workers at the Port of Montreal have launched an “indefinite” overtime strike.

The overtime refusal is aimed at further intensifying the labour standoff as talks between the union and the Maritime Employers Association (MEA) remain unresolved.

Longshoremen are back on the docks at US east and gulf coast ports, but the ILA has not contractually accepted the negotiated wage increase, and there are still issues to resolve.

While the strike on the US East and Gulf Coast has ended, Xeneta’s Peter Sand warns that “it is only a tentative agreement, and automation at ports will remain a major stumbling block.”

Container shipping companies, including CMA CGM, Ocean Network Express (ONE), and COSCO, are invoking force majeure due to the impacts of ongoing ILA strike.
