H2 fuel cell reach stacker

In-Depth

The Hyster hydrogen reach stacker, which is fitted with Nuvera (HysterYale Group) fuel cells, finally arrived at the MSC Valencia terminal in September for testing.

Valencia port dockers had tested the machine and familiarised themselves with it in Nijmegen earlier in the year. As previously reported, due to COVID-19 delays, this H2PORTS project, co-ordinated by Fundación Valenciaport, has been extended for two years, until December 2024.

A mobile hydrogen refuelling station, developed by CNH2 and managed by Carburos Metálicos, is supplying the fuel both for this pilot and the pilot for the fuel cell/battery 4×4 terminal tractor (converted in Italy from an existing diesel unit). This unit has been under testing at Valencia Terminal Europa, which is operated by the Grimaldi Group, since earlier this year.

The number and capacity (kg) of the hydrogen gas tanks on the reach stacker has not been reported by Hyster. Unlike a straddle carrier (cf CMB.TECH dual fuel machine at PSA Antwerp), the weight of the gas tanks need not be a drawback, if they can be positioned so as to be part of the counterweight system.

Nevertheless, there are many questions about fuel cells that maybe the Valencia test will help answer. Creating green hydrogen from electrolysis involves power losses and converting the gas back into electricity in the fuel cells to charge the batteries results in even greater losses of power.
