Rotterdam opens first etruck charging station

Plans to develop a 25-ha depot to store empty containers and a barge/feeder terminal on the Rotterdam Maasvlakte are likely to be abandoned in favour of a facility for Medrepair, a subsidiary of Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC).

Benelux ports have enjoyed a generally good start to the year, and have seen their share of Northern Europe’s container business rise.

As surmised at the start of this year (WorldCargo News, January 2016, p7), Swedish forestry giant SCA is set to expand its SCA Logistics/Interforest operations in the Eemhaven in Rotterdam. It has now signed an agreement with Rotterdam Port Authority (HbR) for an expansion area of 3-ha and a new 208m quay wall. Thus SCA will operate a total area of 23-ha, with 720m of quay wall, plus the 160m berth for ro-ro vessels.

The first pile for a new quay in Rotterdam’s Johan Frisohaven has been driven for United Waalhaven Terminal (UWT), owned by the Waalhaven Group and the ECB Group. UWT will use the quay – which will be 165m long, with a depth alongside of 7m, and eventually deepened to around 10m) – to replace one of its quays in the 1st Eemhaven.
