Russian reefer plant

News-in-print

Ongoing rumours of a potential Russian manufacturer of reefer containers were given some credence this month by reports in the Russian media.

It was reported that an agreement to establish a joint venture to manufacture reefer containers had been signed by Sergey Nosov, governor of Magadan Oblast in the Russian Far East, and Alexander Potapov, head of UralVagonZavod.

UralVagonZavod is part of Russia’s state-owned technology developer Rostech State Corporation. Last year it was reported that UralVagonZavod had won a state contract from the Ministry of Industry and Trade to develop a Russianmade reefer container, partly to reduce the country’s reliance on foreign manufactured equipment.

UralVagonZavod is the world’s largest manufacturer of military battle tanks. It also builds railway wagons and piggyback platforms, and more recently has been seeking to diversify into more commercial markets, including earthmoving equipment and construction machinery. The company already offers a composite tank container, although it is not known whether any have been manufactured and delivered.
