MOL car carrier escapes pirate attack off Somalia

News

Mitsui OSK Lines Ltd (MOL) has reported that its car carrier JASMINE ACE was fired on by pirates

The pirates attacked in two high-speed boats about 480 miles east of Somalia at 16:10 (local time) on Sunday, March 22. The ship sustained some damage to the hull, but quickly accelerated and took evasive action such as zigzagging. After about 40 minutes, the pirates gave up the chase.

No one was injured in the attack, and no oil leaked from the hull, says MOL. Bullets also damaged some windows in the wheelhouse, but the vessel continued under her own power, and proceeded toward safer waters.

The 13,038 gt ship was carrying 377 used cars loaded at the port of Sharjah, UAE for delivery in Mombasa, Kenya.
