A new shortsea shipping service for frozen fish exports from Southern Spain to Northern Europe is being tested
A pilot project for shipping fish exports by sea from Almeria in Southern Spain to Dunkirk, for onward distribution to markets in France, Great Britain, Benelux and Germany, has been launched by Bahia Almeriport and Andalusia Fresh Line, with the support of the Port of Almeria and the Andalusian Fisheries and Farms Association.
Traditionally fish merchants and brokers move the produce by reefer trucks all the way across Spain and France, as trucking provides flexibility to chase “spot” prices. However, using a port as a distribution hub could provide the same results.
On offloading in Dunkirk, the containers are handed over to DailyFresh, the refrigerated cargo logistic specialist that has one of its four Northern European storage and distribution complexes in the French port, for cross-docking to refrigerated trailers.
The first trial shipment of 23 45ft reefer containers was made on VOHBURG towards the end of last month and the containers were dispatched immediately from the NFTI container terminal to the nearby DailyFresh cool rooms, where the contents were immediately restuffed to trailers.
Obviously, quality at outturn is key, and a team from the University of Almeria took part in the unloading and reloading at DailyFresh and tested the state of the cargo. Further trial shipments will be similarly monitored.
Assuming the tests are a success, says the Port of Dunkirk, regular shipments will begin this November, This service will be operated by Holland-based shortsea specialist Van Uden, chartering three ships to provide two weekly sailings in each direction.
