In-Depth

Every dollar of value created in the world economy in 2007 was equivalent to 768g of CO2 emissions. According to Jonathan Porritt, the chairman of Forum for the Future, if one allows for population increases and the need for economic growth in the Third World to alleviate poverty, the equivalent carbon intensity has to be cut to no more than 6g – a ≥125-fold reduction – by 2050 if COP15 is to be met.

Speaking at the Carbon War Room’s latest shipping efficiency seminar, held in London this month, Porritt welcomed the lower CO2 values per cargo tonne associated with Maersk’s Triple-E ships, but added that they represent “incremental” improvements associated with assets with high inertia (25-30 years ship life).
