Dunkirk to cut port tariffs for cleaner vessels
Dunkirk port authority is introducing a rebate for ships complying with ESI norms. The port has also reported a new intermodal rail service from Nord Ports Shuttle
The initiative was announced today (3rd June) during European Sustainable Development Week and meets objectives of the Air Climate Energy Territorial Pact (PACET) already adopted by the Dunkirk urban community.
The ESI was initiated by the IAPH and awards ships scores or points on the basis of their emissions. Shipping lines calling Dunkirk are invited to sign a new charter to work towards these goals.
The port authority has not put a price on the rebate, but says it will be based on the number of ESI-compliant calls by the individual shipping line or charterer (typically bulk shippers using the port), pro-rated to the total number of such vessel calls at the port, on an annualised basis.

Separately, the port has also reported the start-up of a new intermodal rail service. Nord Ports Shuttle, which offers regular container barge connections between Dunkirk and inland ports in Hauts-de-France, is extending its reach with a new intermodal rail service connecting Dunkirk with Metz in Lorriane, in the eastern part of the country (Grand Est).
The service will initially operate on the basis of a weekly pair, scheduled to meet deep sea Asian o/d calls by The Ocean Alliance.
