A new operator has emerged in the Gibraltar Strait ferry business Tangier
Morocco-based Detroit World Logistics Maritime (DWLM) was set up last year by a local entrepreneur, Hakim Rahmouni, who has both agri-trades and general cargo logistics experience.
There is no connection with US Great Lakes trades. DWLM includes the French word for "Strait" or "Narrows," which is how Detroit, Michigan got its name.
DWLM will operate the ro-pax ferry LE RIF between Algeciras and Nador, near Melilla, the Spanish enclave in Morocco close to the border with Algeria.
The vessel was built in Belfast in 1980 for Sealink (IMTC) and has previously been operated as STENA GALLOWAY and GALLOWAY EXPRESS. It was reportedly purchased for DH9M (€0.8M) after a long lay-up and repaired and returned to service in Spain, with support from Jobson Italia.
DWLM is understood to be investigating the purchase of a second vessel, to operate between Almería with Nador.
