MACS and Stinnes under same ownership

News-in-print

The German, Hamburg-based, family controlled shipowner Vineta Bereederungsgesellschaft mbH, which owns MACS, has acquired Rostock headquartered Hugo Stinnes.

The move strengthens MACS’s presence in the transatlantic trade where Stinnes’s Sanmex multipurpose service covering mainly ports in the US South Atlantic and Gulf coast, together with Mexico, is better established. However, for  several  years, the carrier had offered westbound sailings only.

This has now changed, as MACS has stopped its own service, which had operated in each direction, and chartered some tonnage to Stinnes. The two-way service, which does include some inducement calls, operates one/two times a month, and features a base schedule of Bremen, Antwerp, Charleston, Altamira, Veracruz, Houston, Port Arthur, New Orleans, Rotterdam, Immingham, and returns to Bremen.

Stinnes, which Vineta has confirmed will continue to operate as an independent unit from its Rostock office, has full operational and marketing responsibility of the new transatlantic service. It means that MACS will focus on its core container, bulk and general cargo services linking southern Africa with the US and Europe. A dedicated intraAfrica service linking Durban and Maputo is also operated, with the line also offering connections between African ports on its mainline services.
