New transit record at Panama Canal
NewsMSC’s container ship MSC Marie has set a new record at the Panama Canal as the largest capacity Neopanamax vessel to transit the waterway.
Traffic on the Panama Canal is showing signs of recovery after the decline suffered in 2020, following the arrival of the coronavirus pandemic
According to figures released by the Comptroller General of the Republic, in the first eight months of this year, the number of vessel transits rose by 4.5%, compared with a decline of 8.6% in the January-August period of 2020. For context, vessel transits in 2019 grew by 0.5% and in 2018 by 1.2%.
In the period in question this year, 8,955 vessels transited the Panama Canal, of which 6,464 were Panamax ships and 2,491 were neo-Panamax vessels.
Toll revenue has shown growth, too. In the first eight months, it was up 14.4% year-on-year. Last year, in contrast, the eight-month figure showed a drop of 0.4%. Revenue was up 4.5% in 2019, and by 9.8% in 2018.
