K Line to proceed with Safe Berthing Assist development

News

K Line and Kawasaki Heavy Industries have agreed on a R & D project, the “Safe Berthing/Unberthing Assist System,” to enhance safety and efficiency of ships’ port manoeuvres and mooring operations

The R&D will combine the expertise of K Line and K Line Kinkai with advanced technologies from KHI. The aim is to incorporate the latest technologies, including AI.  The system will initially be installed on Japanese domestic vessels operated by K Line Kinkai as a testing ground, and it is hoped to establish the system by spring 2025.

K Line is currently working on the K-Assist Project (K Line Autonomous Ship with Safe and Intelligent Supporting Technology). This uses dynamic positioning technology (DPS) to control propulsion and rudder automatically, combined with the Kawasaki Integrated Control System (KICS) to control multiple steering elements such as the controllable pitch propeller, swivel thruster, side thruster, and rudder.
