The Alabama State Port Authority has approved a design/build contract for a new Intermodal Container Transfer Facility (ICTF).
RT Milford Company has been awarded a US$20.1M contract to design Phase I of the Garrows Bend ICTF, incorporating two operating tracks, a “run around” track, and car repair siding each with a minimum length of 3,000ft. The operating tracks will be served by RTG(s) and the contract covers runways and yard storage. Other project aspects include a chassis storage area, multi-lane gates equipped with OCR, power distribution, lighting and other improvements.
Garrows Bend will service international containers moving through APM Terminals Mobile as well as domestic containers from regional manufacturers. “We are pleased to get this important phase of our intermodal investment program underway,” said James Lyons, director and CEO for the Port Authority. “The delivery of an intermodal rail facility is essential to alleviating time and cost pressures for our shippers, while expanding our market reach.”
The port authority said Garrows Bend complements its new US$10M rail bridge that will connect the ICTF with up to five Class I railroads serving the Port of Mobile. Phase I is expected to be completed by year-end 2015.”
Alabama is focusing on developing container facilities to meet the needs of the state’s growing industrial base. Since it opened in 2008, throughput at the container terminal has grown to 237,000 TEU, rising 10% in the year to September. Current capacity is around 350,000 with a top pick operation. Surfacing work is planned in 2015 to bring Phase II online and increase the terminal by 45 acres.
