Following a three-year project, Kombiverkehr is now able to transport extra long and heavy tank containers on a newly-developed container rail car, SGMNSS rail cars, and has taken 100 into its fleet.
Kombiverkehr, Europe’s biggest UIRR company, is owned 50% by DB Cargo. The rail cars can accommodate two regular 20ft tank containers or one 45ft or one 52ft tank container, which were developed for BASF by Van Hool and Magyar as part of the German chemical shipper’s totally new in-plant logistics project in Ludwigshaven. The units have a capacity of up to 73.5 litres with a payload of 67 tonnes.
Initial trials loading and transporting the exceptionally long and heavy tank containers for end-to-rail transport have been held successfully on the line between Ludwigshafen and Hamm.
The latest development will enable more shippers and chemical products forwarders to move away from tank wagons to more flexible combined transport for end-to-end shipments in Germany and the wider European combined transport network.
