Russian Railways Holding has organised a piggyback service from Bashkiria to the Komi Republic
The first dispatch of 17 platforms with road trailers was made from the Neftekamsk station of Gork’ovskaya Railway to the Usinsk station of Northern Railway, a distance of 1,828 kms.
The platforms used are long-base flatcars owned by FGK, a rolling stock provider owned by Russian Railways (RZD). The platforms can accommodate vehicles up to 18.75m in length. The trailers were loaded with goods and materials for workers working on a rotational basis at remote facilities in the oil and gas industry.
The shipment was also a first for the shipper, which up to now has relied on road transport with specialised heavy duty road tractors – trawls – to move trailers.
The service using piggyback platforms is available to a wide range of clients and Russian Railways Holding is offering it on other routes, including on a regular basis.
Piggyback transportation can be carried out independent of weather conditions and makes it possible to deliver cargo to areas where there is no regular road connection. “This transport solution enables customers to reduce total shipping costs, as well as reduce traffic congestion and reduce environmental impact,” said RZD.
