Consolidation in Kobe
NewsThree companies have signed a MoU to expand Kobe International Container Terminal.
Japan’s ports handled a total of 12.678 mill TEU (mTEU) in 2000, up 9.7 per cent on the figure for 1999, according to figures published last month by the Institute for Advanced Port Transportation of Japan.
The “big five” continue to dominate the traffic with a total of 10.166 mTEU (+9.7%). They were led by Tokyo with 2.638 mTEU (+10%) and Yokohama with 2.262 mTEU (+6.2%), followed by Kobe with 2.039 mTEU (+2.4%), Nagoya with 1.753 mTEU (+14.1%) and Osaka with 1.474 mTEU (+16.2%). Hence growth at the Osaka Bay ports is clearly coming from Osaka at Kobe’s expense, in part due to the continuing effects of the Kobe earthquake.
