Leasing companies looking for unreturned containers leased to bankrupt Hanjin Shipping might want to pay a visit to rural properties in Ontario, California – a town in southwestern San Bernardino County.
This month the City of Ontario, California filed law suits against four different property owners that have been using their rural properties to store hundreds of Hanjin containers, in breach of zoning restrictions on the agricultural lands.
Pictures in local media show a large number of the containers are owned by Textainer, which had the largest exposure to Hanjin Shipping of the leasing companies, with approximately 114,000 containers with the shipping line.
By November 2016 Textainer had recovered or approved for recovery just 41% of its fleet, and was “actively negotiating” the release of an additional 26% of the containers.
