CM Labs Simulations, a Canadian vendor for simulation-based training in the construction, utilities, and port industries, announced the launch of a new simulation training solution for double-empty container handlers.

Designed in collaboration with port operator trainers, the Intellia Double Empty Container Handler Add-On Module instructs operators on using double empty container handler control functions and techniques for loading and unloading containers in a real port setting.

There are many simulators on the market with modules for empty container handlers using a sidelifting spreader, where the container is lifted from a spreader attachment that engages only two of the four top corner castings to lift a container. Twinlift or ‘double’ empty spreaders are available that allow two empty containers (20ft or 40ft) to be lifted together one on top of the other. Here the spreader features a hook that attaches into the top corner castings of the lower container, after which a clamp closes around the hook and the lower corner casting of the top container.

In addition to the different spreader and attachment method, lifting two empty containers together affects the stability and handling of the machine itself. The operator also has to deal with an uneven load when two empty reefer containers are lifted together with the machinery on the same side of the load.

“This add-on module incorporates realistic machine behaviours that are unlike anything else on the market today,” said Devon Van de Kletersteeg, CM Labs’ ports product manager. “It’s the only solution on the market that can tip when the simulated equipment corners too fast, and that truly reacts like the real thing when loads are distributed unevenly.”

Operators can find it challenging to handle the double-empty container handler’s twin lifting capabilities. This training module also addresses a current issue for terminal operators today, as it is crucial to move empty containers as quickly and safely as possible.

“Without a virtual training solution, ports must dedicate more time on the actual equipment to training,” Van de Kletersteeg said. “This helps reduce wear and tear, and allows for a more flexible training schedule.”

The Double Empty Container Handler Add-On Module comes with equipment-grade controls and can be installed on the following CM Labs port equipment training hardware: Advantage, Master, and MasterCab. The Empty Container Handler Training Pack is required to run the Double Empty Container Handler Add-On Module.
