Manila-based terminal operator International Container Terminal Services, Inc (ICTSI) has taken delivery of three new quay cranes at its flagship Manila International Container Terminal (MICT).

Manufactured by ZPMC, the arrivals consist of two Post-Panamax cranes, offering an 18-row reach, which are intended for the terminal’s Berths 3 and 4, and one Neo-Panamax crane with a 20-row reach, which is intended for deployment at Berth 7.

The new cranes expand MICT’s fleet to 18 quay cranes, making it the largest in the Philippines. They will be put into operation after commissioning, enabling faster turnaround times at the country’s premier international trade gateway, ICTSI said.

As WorldCargo News reported in May 2023, ICTSI is adding an eighth berth to MICT as part of efforts to strengthen its capability to handle ultra large container vessels of up to 18,000 TEU.

To be constructed in phases, Berth 8 will create another 400m of quay, along with 12-ha of yard space, which will bring an additional annual capacity of 200,000 TEU. When completed, MICT will have an annual capacity of 3.5M TEU, making MICT the Philippines’ largest international gateway. The full build will give MICT a total berth length of 2,300m and a 21% increase in berthing capacity.

Including equipment, it is estimated that Berth 8 will cost PHP15B (US$267M). It will be equipped with a minimum of four STS cranes, the first two of which are set to arrive in 2025.

Aside from the construction of Berth 8, ICTSI has commenced the modernisation of Berths 1 to 5 and their back-up and yard areas. The project includes the installation of additional reefer racks to accommodate approximately 300 TEU of reefer cargo.
