Lightweight M2M & Container 42 for Traxens

Asset tracking specialist Traxens has partnered with AVSystem to provide automated device management for telemetry and firmware upgrades.

Lightweight M2M & Container 42 for Traxens

The partnership means Traxens “internet of Big Things” technology for container tracking will be supported by the Coiote IoT Device Management platform from AVSystem. “The trackers, through the use of the LwM2M protocol, will be able to easily perform firmware and software upgrades over the air, as well as provide information, such as geolocation, temperature and other various conditions in the environment surrounding the containers,” Traxens said.

 

Lightweight M2M is a protocol from the Open Mobile Alliance for M2M or IoT device management. “ Choosing a standard over a custom or a proprietary protocol gives Traxens a long-term advantage due to reduced costs of maintenance and avoiding vendor lock-in”, said Traxens.

 

“What’s unique about Lightweight M2M is that it’s constantly evolving, yet at the same time preserving its lightweightedness. With its 1.1 version we were introduced to fundamental changes, such as new transport bindings like TCP or non-ip data delivery featuring 3GPP CIoT, as well as LoRaWAN. A new 1.2 release is already being planned and includes even more enhancements and optimizations; suffice to say, it will surely secure LwM2M’s position as a strong challenger among IoT standards for telemetry and device management, said Borys Godowski, sales director at AVSystem.

 

Traxens believes AVSystem’s IoT device management platform and the LwM2M protocol will allow Traxens to “considerably prolong the battery life of its devices and enable efficient performance, even in difficult conditions and over potentially unstable networks. Furthermore, using OMA SpecWorks’ standard allows Traxens to avoid vendor lock-in and enables the IoT device management side of its business to be future-oriented”.

 

“Our internal evaluation showed beyond doubt that LwM2M is a future-proof standard worth adopting. Moreover, during vendor selection process, AVSystem demonstrated best-of-breed product that’s ready to use thanks to its strong device auto-discovery features. What’s more, with the Coiote IoT Device Management platform, all device management processes have become automated, which saved time and allowed us to focus on other areas of our business,” said Lucas Moulin, program and solution director at Traxens.

 

In another announcement, Traxens has joined the Port of Rotterdam in its Container 42 initiative. This project aims to gather data and insights from a container fitted out with sensors and telematics devices as it travels around the world over two years to help understand challenges around logistics.

 

“Joining as a key partner in the #WeAre42 smart container project, Traxens will provide the technology to help answer questions on logistical efficiency, sustainability and the future of technology in the supply chain, Traxens said. The container will be fitted with a Traxens device that will generate IoT data via its platform, Traxens Hub.

 

“Traxens will provide an important part of the entire embedded technology, it will measure changes in everything from vibration, acceleration, position and sound to local air pollution, temperature and humidity. The Smart Container has also been fitted with solar panels; the journey will help determine how much power the container generates and uses for data gathering,” Traxens said.

 

“Our smart technology will gather, generate and aggregate data from Container 42 in this worldwide data finding mission. The Port of Rotterdam is one of the leading ports in the world. We are looking forward to working with them to digitally transform multimodal supply chains and improve logistical efficiency,” said Jacques Delort, managing director at Traxens.
