The Italian ports industry remains distinctly fluid, with many new deals in the offing

Last month a new agreement was confirmed between Eurogate’s Contship Italia and the Port of Rijeka (LR) in Croatia. Under the deal signed by CI’s vice president Giuliano Alberghini and LR’s CEO Miran Cofek, Med-center Container Terminal (MCT) will take over the management of LR’s container/ro-ro terminal for three years and, at the end of the first year, can exercise an option to take a 50 per cent stake in a new joint venture to be formed as part of the ongoing privatisation process in Rijeka. Recently Rotterdam Maritime Group struck a deal with the World Bank regarding assistance to the Port of Rijeka, aimed at restructuring the management.
