Zero emissions struggle
NewsTerminal operators in LA and Long Beach face challenges in meeting the 2030 zero-emissions goal, with slow progress on replacing diesel-powered equipment.
NAWC ports have faced a threeway drain on capital for several years. But now terminal construction has slowed as port funds are redirected to security demands and the mounting burden of environmental regulations.
A new outline plan to cut air pollution at Los Angeles and Long Beach was approved early this moth by a task force of the ports, shipping lines, railroads and air regulatory agencies. This should lead to more ‘cold-ironing’ for berthed vessels, low sulphur fuel for ships and trains and subsidised alternative fuels for trucks and cargo handling equipment.
