Rotterdam eyeing further steel inroads

Traffic has been growing strongly at the Port of Rotterdam. Container traffic rose sharply in the first quarter of this year, due to accelerated growth in the number of inbound containers from Asia, following a period of more modest growth. Throughput increased 10% to 2,544,000 TEU (24.7 mt in tonnage), despite a diversion of some container ship calls due to industrial action by Smit tugboat men that is estimated to have lost the port 70,000 TEU of business to Antwerp and Hamburg.
