Contship Italia SpA (Eurogate group) is testing a new bi-directional, RFID obstacle detection system from TP Srl at La Spezia Container terminal (LSCT). The system is designed to prevent any danger of cargo handling equipment running over dockworkers and other terminal staff in the vicinity of the stacks and in general CY and IY handling operations.

To WorldCargo News’ knowledge, systems using vestpacks have been tested in the UK, but the LSCT application is claimed to be the first of its kind. For the trial, two reach stackers have been fitted with RFID readers with omnidirectional antennae and 30 pedestrians have been given tags which, it is understood, they wear round their necks.
