TPCT starts operations

Evergreen has signed on for a new 4M TEU automated terminal at Kaohsiung, Taiwan.

With the sailing of EVER SIGMA from Táranto Container Terminal (TCT) on 20 September, Evergreen Marine Corporation is transferring its China-Europe Shuttle (CES) service, in which ten 7000 TEU ships are deployed, to Piraeus.

Container throughput at the Port of Kaohsiung declined by 11.34% to 8.58M TEU in 2009, pushing it one place down in the world container port rankings to 13th position.

Because of low utilisation of the first two berths at Taipei Port Container Terminal (TPCT), which became operational in March this year, the opening of Berths 3 and 4 has been postponed until next year. “Utilisation rate of the two berths is below 50% because of the global recession,” a TPCT official said.”
