The Danish port of Kalundborg, which is located in western Sjaelland, is to spend €26M on expanding its berthing and storage capacity.
In all, the port is planning to construct another 500m of quay with a 15m draught alongside and increase its cargo storage area by more than a third (330,000m2). In particular, the port wants infrastructure in place that will enable it to handle more container ships as well as increase its presence in the industrial shipping sector.
The area targeted for the new port complex is Ny Vesthavn. The authority expects to commence work on the project in the summer of 2017 and it estimates a 15 to 18 month construction and development phase with the new facilities being fully commissioned by the end of 2018. Once opened, the port’s container-handling operations will switch to Ny Vesthavn and the old terminal will be used for other purposes.
Bent Rasmussen, CEO of the port of Kalundborg, explained: “Deep water is an important future issue in the shipping business and we want to invest in the future. But we have run out of space. In order to fulfil the enormous growth potential of the port and the area we serve we will expand and this will enable new companies to settle as well as securing the port and the surrounding business cluster to keep developing.”
The business cluster that has developed in the vicinity of the port is the largest industrial area in eastern Denmark outside of Copenhagen and provides an important and growing cargo base for Kalundborg.
