First mobile harbour crane for Guyana

News

IDB Invest has agreed a US$4M loan with Muneshwers Ltd, which it will use to acquire a mobile harbour crane for its terminal in the Port of Georgetown

This will be the first mobile harbour crane, or indeed port crane of any kind, to be deployed in Guyana. At present, only geared cargo vessels can use the country’s ports, limiting productivity and increasing turnaround time.

Muneshwers says that the presence of a crane will boost its annual handling capacity from 60,000 TEU to 109,000 TEU by 2025, given forecast annual throughput increases of 16%.

As part of the IDB Invest package, Muneshwers will have to adopt certain environmental and social standards, particularly in the operations with the acquired assets. This includes development and introduction of an Environmental and Social Action Plan to mitigate environmental and social risks in daily operations.

It is not known whether a tender process for the MHC is under way.

Muneshwers Limited is a privately owned and operated company headquartered in Georgetown, Guyana and is now in its third generation of ownership. It is one of the five multi-purpose terminals in Port Georgetown and has a significant market share.
