New heavy equipment processor facility for Georgia Ports
NewsHeavy equipment producers moving cargo through the Georgia Ports Authority have a new Savannah-area processing and logistics services option.
In a bid to reduce truck traffic in local neighbourhoods and cut levels of pollution, Georgia Ports Authority (GPA) is to invest US$29M in the construction of a new overpass.
The road will provide a direct link between Savannah’s Ocean Terminal and Route 17 which is the main arterial highway serving the port. In addition to the new highway, the GPA will also build a dedicated exit ramp from Route 17 and a new truck-only entrance roadway into Ocean Terminal.
The construction of the highway and associated infrastructure will mean trucks being able to avoid Louisville Road and local streets to join the highway, potentially improving transit times, cutting drayage costs and reducing emissions.
The overpass project has been in the discussion and planning phase for some time and follows the GPA’s decision to reach out to local residents around the Ocean Terminal to canvass their views on the increasing volume of truck in the area.
“This is a port project in the best interest of the community,” explained Griff Lynch, president and CEO of the GPA. “We want to keep trucks off local neighbourhood roads for safety and sustainability reasons.”
The city of Savannah and the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) are also involved in the overpass project with construction scheduled to be completed in 2026. Once built, the GDOT will be responsible for the highway’s maintenance and repair.
