The Container Owners Association has issued an “Industry Alert” to help identify the owners of containers previously on lease to Hanjin Shipping.
In response to the Hanjin Shipping now operating in receivership, the Container Owners Association (COA) has, acting in the interests of its members, issued a list of owners of various types of containers (with their prefixes) which were previously on lease to Hanjin.
“If you come across any equipment previously on lease to Hanjin Line, this document will help you identify the rightful owner, and facilitate its return to the rightful owner.
“Please make contact with the relevant owner. Please also be aware any attempt to interfere with legal rights of the container owners is unlawful and the relevant company may respond accordingly, to enforce its rights,” the COA said in a statement.
From figures reported by some of the listed leasing companies on the number of boxes they have leased to Hanjin, it is estimated that the collapsed Korean carrier had around 750,000 containers on lease. Depending on where these containers are located, the cost of retrieval and relocation may exceed their current book value in some instances.
