Tecon Salvador takes delivery of 12 Shacman electric terminal tractors, two reach stackers and an empty container handler.

Tecon Salvador, part of the Brazilian shipping line and ports operator Wilson, Sons has taken delivery of 12 battery electric terminal tractors, plus two electric reachstackers and an electric ECH.

The terminal tractors were manufactured by China’s Shacman, a brand of Shaanxi Automobile Holding Group in Xian, Shaanxi Province. ZPMC is marketing Shacman terminal tractors to ports globally. It is believed ZPMC also supplied the two reachstackers and the ECH.

Demir Lourenço, the executive director of Tecon Salvador, said the 12 electric tractors will reduce the terminal’s diesel consumption by 150,000 litres per year, which is equivalent to reducing up to 341 tonnes of CO2 in the atmosphere. Other benefits are expected to be reduced maintenance and improved driver comfort and safety from the improved ergonomics of the new machines.

“This and other measures taken help us advance towards our goal of being recognised as a leader in ESG initiatives in the port and maritime logistics sector, leaving a positive impact for our shareholders and engaging them, and our employees, in a trajectory of growth driven by sustainable actions,” said Wilson, Sons Sustainability Director, Monica Jaén.

Meanwhile it has been reported that MSC is interested in acquiring a controlling interest in Wilson, Sons. Earlier this month London-listed Ocean Wilsons, which has the controlling interest in Wilson, Sons, said it was considering strategic options for the Brazilian shipping and ports company. MSC is said to be in talks to acquire its stake in a deal worth around US $1 billion.
