US federal transportation secretary Ray LaHood has announced that work can begin on rail infrastructure improvements that will allow double-stacked trains to move freely from Northwest Ohio through Pennsylvania, West Virginia and Maryland
The project is s the result of an agreement between the DoT and the Ohio Rail Development Commission on a $98M Recovery Act grant.
Funding for the National Gateway Initiative will allow trains to carry double-stacked containers, which will increase freight capacity and make the corridors an option for major ports and shippers, and will shorten transport times and expand access to rail services, said the DoT in a press release.
“This new initiative will give businesses a more competitive edge by giving them additional options for moving goods between the Midwest and our nation‘s ports along the east coast,” said federal highway administrator Victor Mendez.
CSX Transportation announced its “National Gateway” initiative in May 2008 to upgrade the rail infrastructure between Mid-Atlantic ports and the Midwest.
Norfolk Southern has made improvements to its own double-stack rail freight route called the “Heartland Corridor,” which connects Midwestern shippers to Virginia’s Hampton Roads facilities.
