Last month, Freightliner UK, part of Genesee & Wyoming, Inc, was awarded a 5-year contract by The Malcolm Group to haul the Daventry to Grangemouth domestic intermodal rail service
The service provides one train pair overnight, seven days a week, moving up to 36 platforms of domestic product each way. According to a statement issued by both companies, Malcolm benefits from a 25% increase in the volume of goods that can be moved due to using Freightliner lighter wagons.
The Malcolm Group will use Freightliner’s Omnia tool to provide real-time data of running times, live tracking and a view into carbon emissions.
Freightliner has diversified into different railfreight segments and associated logistics services, but on the intermodal side it is known as the UK’s biggest shipping container haulier – for forwarders as well as shipping lines, but still mainly the latter. The Daventry-Grangemouth domestic intermodal Malcolm business has been won from DB Cargo, which has been operating it since it won the contract from DRS Direct Rail Services in 2014.
