Rhenus sets sights on intermodal terminal in Aktau, Kazakhstan
NewsGermany-based Rhenus Group has signed a declaration of intent with Kazakhstan’s NC Aktau Sea Commercial Port JSC to develop an intermodal terminal in Aktau, Kazakhstan
Located in the middle of Kazakhstan’s Saryesik-Atyrau desert, Khorgos Gateway dry port could be labelled as one of the most inhospitable places in the world.
While geographically this description might be apt, commercially speaking, this could not be further from the truth.
In less than three years, Khorgos has emerged as an important cargo hub for trains and trucks moving to/from China, including on the Silk Road. Potentially, the inland port could become one of the most important commercial centres in Kazakhstan, given its location close to the ChinaKazakh free trade zone and the new city of Horgos, just across the border in China. It is also critical to the administration’s goal of reducing the economy’s reliance on oil and gas exports.
DP World has a 10-year contract to manage and advise on developments at Khorgos, and the group offers similar consultancy services at the Caspian Sea port of Aktau.
According to Sultan Ahmed Bin Sulayem, chairman and CEO of DP World, the group is keen to expand its presence in the country. “We have a fruitful relationship with the government of Kazakhstan that we are looking to build on, and will work with them on projects which support the flow of goods and enable trade across the region,” he said. “In our experience, New Silk Road countries need to continue developing trade-centric solutions, and we can help bring together all the ingredients required to encourage trade – from marine and inland terminals, free zones, customs and logistics underpinned by mart technology – to create a thriving business environment. The trade and investment opportunities in the New Silk Road are immense.”
