Boegoebaai energy port project

News

South Africa’s Transnet National Ports Authority has short-listed three three consortia for the project to build a new port and associated rail infrastructure at Boegoebaai

The three consortia are the Boegoebaai Port & Rail Consortium, Boegoebaai Development Consortium and Project Elephant Consort. All are a mix of South African and foreign companies. They will now be asked to proceed to detailed design, engineering and construction and costings proposals. The projected investment is SAR2.8B (€143M).

The Boegoebaai Port & Rail Consortium is believed to include Royal Vopak and the Port of Rotterdam, which are already collaborating on a number of green energy projects in Rotterdam.

No timeframe has yet been provided for bid submission, financial close and construction. However, port operations are expected to commence in 2030, with the 800 kms new rail link to connect with mining and industrial areas to be ready by 2036.

The port, to be located in a special economic zone, will occupy an area of 2,882-ha, including 1,500-ha of ammonia tank storage.

South Africa hopes to use abundant wind and sun resources on its arid west coast to generate the renewable energy to produce green hydrogen and hence green ammonia. The port may also be used to export manganese.
