Port Houston awards RTG tyre contract

News-in-print

The Port of Houston has awarded a three year contract valued at US$2.5M for the purchase and maintenance of RTG tyres to Southern Tire Mart, LLC.

The contract was awarded after a competitive bidding process that saw three companies submit tenders. Southern Tires submitted the lowest and best bid, and has a track record at the port. In 2021, the company was awarded a two year contract worth up to US$1M for purchase and maintenance of RTG tyres, which has now been fully depleted.

As well as being of a longer duration, the new contract will cover significantly more RTG tyres. Currently there are 116 RTGs operating at Houston’s terminals. An additional 26 RTGs are due for delivery by Q2 2024, with a further five machines for Barbours Cut by Q3 2025.

All of the RTGs at Houston are 16-wheel machines from Konecranes, including all of the new cranes on order. In total 2,352 tyres are to be maintained over the three-year term of the contract.
