Ports reorganisation in Sicily
NewsThe port authority for the ports of Augusta and Catania is undertaking a major change in the vocation of the ports, spearheaded by issuing a public tender for €317M of project financing
Agreement has been reached to transfer a land parcel and quay in the Sicilian port of Augusta to EST Catania
The deal between the incumbent operator, ITSA, and EST Catania was brokered by the port authority, Autorità di Sistema Portuale del Mar di Sicilia Orientale, on an arm’s length basis, as part of a plan to rationalise the berthing arrangements at the three ports under its jurisdicition, Augusta, Catania and Pozzallo. Discussions had been going on for more than a year. They were prompted by Grimaldi’s demand for more space at its ro-pax terminal in Catania.
“We have reached an agreement by which EST from Catania will shortly start moving its container handling activities from Catania to part of the port of Augusta that up to now it has been our privilege to operate,” stated Alfio Fazio from ITSA.
The area in question covers 100,000 m2 at Punta Cugno, most of which will be released by late October, with the rest following by the end of this year. In exchange, ITSA will be handed a parcel of 32,000 m2 including a 200m long linear berth.
The operations of COMAP (Fratelli Fazio) in Augusta are unaffected by these changes. At the start of this year, COMAP took delivery of a new Italgru IMHC 2120 E, with electric drive. The crane has a maximum capacity under hook of 125 tonnes.
