PEMA publishes paper on ultracapacitors

News

Information paper IP26, “Ultracapacitors in Port Applications,” is the first for 2023, and is intended to provide information on ultracapacitors and their implementation in energy storage systems for RTGs and other port equipment based on this technology

The IP highlights the issues and options that should considered during the selection process for such equipment, including the benefits and limitations of the technology.

“Ports around the world are exploring ways to reduce emissions and optimize their use of energy resources. In addition, local communities in the vicinity of port facilities are increasing pressure for the introduction of new environmental regulations to reduce emissions.

“This paper describes one technology – energy storage using ultracapacitors – designed to achieve these goals on the diesel-powered RTGs that are widely used at many container terminals.”

The IP includes a comparison of ultracapacitor and battery technologies, looking at the “pros and cons” of both. A copy of the paper can be downloaded here.
