Plug-in hybrid tug for Kirby in Houston

News

The first plug-in hybrid electric inland towing boat in the US has been put into service in the Port of Houston by Kirby Inland Marine

The newly-built GREEN DIAMOND has been time-chartered by Shell Trading (US) Company and will be used to push barges throughout the Houston region. Shell Energy Solutions is providing electrical power matched 100% by certified renewable energy certificates for dockside charging of the vessel’s batteries.

The tow boat was built by San Jac Marine, LLC, an affiliate of Kirby Group, in Channelview, Texas, while the power management control and propulsion systems were designed and installed by another Kirby affiliate, Steward & Stevenson Manufacturing Technologies.

The vessel is driven by two 575 kW Danfoss electric motors, powered by Corvus Energy “Orca” series batteries, which produce 1243 kWh power; or, if needed, by onboard Caterpillar generators. Shell will use the Zinus charging system for dockside charging of the batteries.

“The plug-in hybrid design offers numerous advantages for tugs in certain trades and we are already looking at building more vessels,” said Mitch Jones, Vice President of San Jac Marine.
